Remember writing essays about role models, people who inspire you or your favorite celebrities in school. I'm sure each and everyone of us has at some point in our school years written about such larger than life personas. People who have displayed extraordinary courage, perseverance and commitment in the face of life's toughest challenges. For as long as I can remember whenever I was asked about my role model in life, my answer would always be, my father!

Neurosurgeon, Director of (a charitable trust hospital) CIIMS, published poet, social servant....... countless names can be used to address my father. His personal journey is filled with achievements, accolades and people's adoration for his work. But he started from rather humble beginnings. He grew up in a large household with six other siblings under financial constraints. Being the eldest of the lot, he had quite a few responsibilities and expectations to live up to. Undeterred, he worked really hard to succeed academically and became the first doctor in his family. He furthered his education with a specialization in Neurosurgery. At the time he decided to take up Neurosurgery, a lot of his colleagues and relatives discouraged him. They teased him saying " Jaat mein dimaag kaam hota hai, tu dimaag ka doctor banke kya karega!! Haadiyo ka doctor baan ja! (Jaats have very little brains, what will you do becoming a brain doctor!! Become a bone doctor instead!). Breaking myths and proving yet again that anything can be done once you put your mind to it. Today, he is one of the top Neurosurgeons in the country. His relentless pursuit of excellence and never say die attitude have been the driving force for the upward trajectory in his life.  

Winning " Maharashtrian of the Year 2019" is yet another feather in his cap! He's given true meaning to his favorite quote " Life's a marathon! It doesn't matter where you start from, what matters is where you stand at the end."

Attending the Maharashtrian of the Year 2019 awards ceremony was quite literally a "starlit" experience. Sitting at the front flanked by Bollywood celebrities (read Deepika Padukone and Vicky Kaushal), political bigwigs and other dignitaries, watching my father receive this prestigious award was a surreal "first" for me! Fingers crossed for many more such firsts!!
